Last week, I introduced the question of how we ground our concepts of rights, with some discussion about the contrasting views of Democrats and Republicans in U.S. politics. Today, I wish to propose what I see as the foundation of rights generally. My position draws on the natural rights theory, but disposes of the need for any supernatural origins, asking instead what sort of a society must necessarily follow.
